Periphery Experiment On New EP

Progressive metal band Periphery released their second EP Clear last month. The EP contains an intro written by the entire band and then six other tracks written by each member of the band.
"Overture" is the intro track and is an instrumental cut that sets the mood of the EP and starts out the melodic theme for the other songs.
"The Summer Jam" written  by guitarist Jake Bowen is classic Periphery. Catchy clean vocals and djent guitar chords. Singer and guitarist Spencer Sotelo shows his vocal range and goes seamlessly going between harsh vocals as he does so well on most Periphery songs.
"Feed the Ground" is written by drummer Matt Halpern. The song sounds like a lot of Periphery songs and while it isn't a bad song it doesn't do anything different or better than other songs by the band. It's catchy enough and Sotelo's clean vocals are on point as are his unclean vocals.
"Zero" was written by guitarist Misha Mansoor is an instrumental cut that holds it's own with the rest of the band. The instruments are insane and while I'm not really a fan of instrumental music, this song is still great.
"The Parade of Ashes" is written by vocalist Spencer Sotelo. This song is a poppy yet heavy song that is the best song on the EP as well as one of the band's best songs in general. It's catchy and aggressive and is sure to be a live favorite for years to come.
"Extraneous" is written by bassist Adam "Nolly" Getgood and it's an instrumental cut that isn't as good as "Zero" but it's still heavy and it slays.
"Pale Aura" is written by guitarist Mark Holcomb. The song is a good way to close the album. It starts off with Sotelo doing unclean vocals. Then in the chorus Sotelo employs epic clean vocals. This song is a great way to close off the EP.
While this EP is hit and miss, it does show that Periphery are a versatile band who can sing, write and produce a wide array of music. It also should get fans excited about a full album later on this year.

Periphery release epic, yet repetitive new album

Periphery's debut album was kind of overrated. There were nothing but good songs and yet nothing really stood out with the exception of a few songs. That's how their new album Periphery II: This Time It's Personal plays out. While certain songs like the "Facepalm Mute" and the first single "MAKE TOTAL DESTROY" stand apart from the crowd, other songs towards the end of the record simply tend to melt together into one metal monster song. This album however is better than the first. There are more memorable songs. From the "Have a Blast" to "The Gods Must Be Crazy," the album is full of great songs.
The best two songs are the intro "Muramasa" and the true album highlight "Scarlett." The band called the later the poppiest thing the band has ever done and that's no understatement. The song is melodic and catchy, something about it is beautifully done. Front man Spencer Sotelo is part of what makes the band so great. He can go so effortlessly between clean and unclean vocals. He is like a male version of Mary Zimmer from the defunct metal band Luna Mortis. She, like Sotelo have such smooth transitions, it's like they don't even take a breath. The one thing that Sotelo and company could do to improve their sound is to just change things up on the musical arrangements and vocal arrangements. These changes could make this band all the greater than they already are.

Periphery release epic new single

Periphery's new album Periphery II will be out next month and their first single was released this week. "Make Total Destroy" may just be my favorite Periphery song ever. The verses come at you like a heavyweight boxer trying to get a K.O. and the clean vocals of the chorus and bridge are simply amazing. Vocalist Spencer Sotelo truly shines on this song. This makes the new album definitely something that everybody should be looking forward to. Below is a video of the song.

In This Moment and Periphery announce new albums

Metalcore kings and queen In This Moment have announced their fourth studio record entitled Blood. The album will be released on August 14. The first video has been shot and the band put on facebook that it is "Insane!" No word yet on when the single will be released.
Progressive Metal band Periphery announed today that their second studio album will be released July 3. No title, single or any details have been announced but this is still exciting news.
Metal fans just got two releases that will make the summer hotter than ever.
